Celebrating the London Olympics

If you’re like me, you haven’t been able to tear yourself away from the Olympics.  All I keep thinking is what did we do before DVR?!  I am loving watching the athletes compete and seeing history in the making.  Although I am undoubtedly pro-Team USA, I have to give a shout out to the host team, Great Britain.  It has me thinking of fun ways to incorporate the Union Jack into interior design.

Tinsley Hutson-Wiley and Allison Bloom were ahead of the curve when they installed this modern pantry in the SF Decorator Showcase house…

I love the horizontal beadboard painted with a neutral Union Jack and open shelves.  This would be a fantastic, budget-friendly update to an older kitchen as it eliminates one of the most expensive components – cabinetry.

Another obvious use for a dash of patriotism in interior design, whether it’s the Union Jack, the American flag, etc. is on painted furniture.  I love what Marian, aka Miss Mustard Seed, did with an antique dresser…

Union Jack Dresser by Mustard Seed Interiors

This is a great DIY project.  Just take a vintage dresser with great lines, sand, prime and paint with your country’s flag…and voilá, a very cool, statement piece of furniture.  Custom furniture is one of the best ways to create a unique design for your home.
