Pillows

Accent pillows can really make a room.  Which is why I always suggest to clients that we make custom pillows because you can create the perfect size and add unique details such as decorative trims that really make the room pop.

I start with a selection of fabrics and trims that compliments the furniture in the room.  Then I draw up a pillow sketch, calling out the materials, dimensions and details, so that my sewing workroom can whip them up.  Below you can see an example of “the plan” and the end result…

Denise Maloney Interior Design Custom Marin PillowsYou don’t have to use a sewing workroom to create your own pillows.  If you’re on a budget and have your own sewing machine, you can create your own pillows in an afternoon.  I designed and sewed these blue-toned pillows for my own home and I love the way the brush fringe and cord trim make them different from anything you can buy in a retail store…

Floor PillowsOne last tip on pillows, if you buy a sofa that comes with matching pillows, please consider using something different.  If the size works (preferably a minimum of 20″ square for a decent size sofa), you can have them re-covered in a contrasting fabric that will compliment your sofa fabric.  If they’re too small, which they often are, donate them and start from scratch.  Start with a down-feather blend pillow insert, then add fabric and fun, decorative trims, and voilá…instant designer sofa!

Until next time…

Your diligent designer,

Denise
